In this book, his brother Bob, also a basketball coach and broadcaster, tells the story of Jim's life through a collection of reminiscences from colleagues and friends who knew him. This scrapbook approach is woven into Bob's own personal narrative and covers both career highlights (NCAA tournament triumphs) and troubles (being fired from North Carolina State under a swirl of allegations). It also includes the speech he made at the ESPYs just two months before he died. Jimmy Valvano was a high-profile college basketball coach whose underdog North Carolina State team won the NCAA tournament in 1983. He was fired in 1990 under a cloud of scandal but reentered the national spotlight as a basketball commentator. His heroic battle with cancer and subsequent death led to his virtual sanctification within much of the sports community. Bob Valvano, Jimmy's younger brother, does his best to set the record straight. Jim Valvano was neither a saint nor a coaching outlaw. He was a charismatic coach who let his program at NC State slip out of his control. He was also a decent man who helped many more than he harmed. Bob Valvano is a sportscaster based in Louisville, Kentucky. He is a basketball analyst for ESPN and the color analyst for University of Louisville men's basketball games on both radio and television. He formerly coached the Bellarmine University Knights men's basketball team in Louisville. He is also a radio talk-show host on both the national and local level. Mike Krzyzewski is the head basketball coach at Duke University. He has led the team to four NCAA championships and is the coach with the most victories in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history.

The amount of repetition is staggering. I couldn't get through more than a couple of chapters of this and even skipping ahead didn't alleviate that. The amount of information you get per page is thus very, very limited. The writing style is also very dry and they used a glossy ink, so the book is just plain fatiguing to try to read.

The book is confusing and barely readable. For example:> Jargon is heaped on top of jargon;> Definitions of new concepts are heavily dependent on previously poorly defined concepts;> Many sections begin with long descriptions of concepts the authors have chosen not to use – BEFORE describing the concepts they will be using.I won’t go on any further. A cogent presentation of the substance in this book would probably take one-quarter of the pages in this book.

If felt a bit too theoretical for what I needed to accomplish in my organization. The book does include all the sections I would expect it to contain, including definitions, existing tools and the various components of mdm but I felt like those should have been at the very beginning of the book, not at the end.Some sections have no interruptions, just very long paragraphs that span several pages. In other places, bullet points that seem to go on forever..

I found this book gave me useful understanding of the theory of MDM, which is what I wanted. It also provides some good high level architectures. I think it would have benefitted from more in the way of Case studies, particularly lessons learned. The true value of MDM can be questionable when it comes down to the practical hands on, so real life examples are paramount.

I found the book rather lacking in technical specifics. It is geared more toward a CTO/CIO audience. If you need to "sell" an MDM project to management, then you'll find good material in this book

Great book. Covers the why/what as well as the how. Must read for MDM practitioners starting out.

Once again it helped me immensely for my MSC in IT, as well as for my work. Good source.
