I bought this book because I was hoping to find some wonderfully detailed architectural examples included, which I had never seen. Having to order everything because there are no good bookstores where I exist, I was happily not disappointed.When someone say's "I like art deco", one has to be careful because not all art deco is equal. In this book, the majority are quite beautiful, well photographed and lovely examples categorised by region of the country. On one page, Grauman's Chinese Theatre is included with a side view illustration, and I would never have considered that to be art deco. This shows that the style is more homogenous than I realised. A detailed presentation of Bullock's Wilshire is one of my favourite, and can't believe I lived in L.A. for 3 years and never took notice. But there could have more pages dedicated to the Chrysler and Empire State buildings. Maybe those are books in and of themselves. Nevertheless, there is a wealth of information contained on the pages of this book, and the cover alone makes this a lovely presentation piece to have on display.

This is by far the best collection and presentation of colored images representative of american art deco. Ive gone through numerous titles at the library (and it's affiliates) to finally have discovered this book. I loved it so much that I had to get my own copy.

When the box arrived there was a big glob of liquid soup on the cover that seeped over omg the pages so now they are wavy on the edges and the sleeve was ripped a little. The soap was easy to wipe off but just very strange since it was the only thing in the box.

Each page inspires awe in this book. Gorgeous photos jump right off the page. Worth every penny if you are a lover of all things Art Deco. I find myself torn with this book. I want to show it to everyone I know, but I also want to keep it all to myself, sacred, like a holy book. So many of the pages would be excellent as framed art prints.

About the Author

Leon I. Hammer, M.D. is a graduate of Cornell University, Cornell Medical College, and the William A. White Institute of Psychoanalysis and Psychiatry. During the early 1970s he studied Chinese medicine in England with Dr. Richard Van Buren, and then apprenticed for eight years in New York and Massachusetts with Dr. John H.F. Shen, a widely recognized master of Chinese pulse diagnosis. Dr. Hammer practiced Chinese medicine until 1990, when he began teaching pulse workshops in the United States and abroad. He is the author of Dragon Rises, Redbird Flies, a study of the relationship between Chinese medicine and Western psychology, and is president of the Dragon Rises School of Oriental Medicine in Gainesville, Florida.

I bought this for a gift for a friend who is an open minded psychiatrist. It's fascinating stuff. Emotional problems and mental illness are viewed and described through the prism of Oriental Medicine, which is interested in getting to the root cause. Some of it is a bit technical for those of us who don't have a background in Oriental thinking and medicine, but most of the book describes cases and is an interesting and thought provoking read for the intelligent layperson. Highly recommended for everyone interested in or dealing with mental/emotional problems. Fascinating and different.

This holistic and insightful book came highly recommended from a highly educated, talented and globally-savvy health practitioner... I work in healthcare and health research, and this is one of those books (if not THE book) that any practitioner working in a healing modality or health/mental healthcare field (whether eastern or western, complimentary or combined) would benefit from...to me, it's a MUST read... Will improve the understandings and hence healing outcomes of any practitioner -- great read for anyone interested in healing or who is going through a challenge. A magnificent read.

Dr. Hammer is very informed & experienced with Chinese medicine. Great effort integrating Eastern time honored methods & principles with Western medicine. I wish he would address more regarding psychodynamic therapy given his training as a psychoanalyst as well. I believe that psychodynamic therapy, the abiltiy to very deeply understand another, is as transforming as Chinese medicine.
